S&ME celebrates 35th anniversary on August 21st
Raleigh, NC - A Raleigh-based engineering and environmental company is celebrating its 35th anniversary.
S&ME, Inc. opened its doors with just seven employees in a tiny building in North Raleigh on August 21, 1973. Today, the firm employs 900 in 22 offices throughout the Southeast.
Randy Neuhaus, who became the firm’s president January 1, said the company is a far cry from its beginnings.
“We started with geotechnical engineering, mainly drilling to get subsurface samples at future construction sites,” Neuhaus said. “After testing, our engineers could make recommendations on various construction issues, including the correct type and cost-effectiveness of foundations for the kind of structure proposed.”
In the 1980s, S&ME broadened its scope greatly by adding environmental engineering and related services. “Our scope and experience just allows us to do so much more for our clients now,” Neuhaus said. “We design and implement cleanups of groundwater and soil contamination and address many other environmental issues. We also provide occupational health and safety services, natural resources solutions, including stream restorations, and archeology – some things S&ME never dreamed of in 1973.”
One of the company’s observations of its 35th is to participate in 35 community service events across its office locations in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. “Our employees’ ideas for this include active involvement in community cleanup campaigns, blood drives, youth activities including educational and recreational projects, food bank drives, energy conservation and recycling efforts,” Neuhaus said.
“We old-timers see the 35th as a mark of our experience,” Neuhaus said. “It’s a good symbol of our achievements and reflects the honesty and integrity people see in us.”
Nationally, S&ME appears on Engineering-News Record (ENR) magazine’s Top 500 Design Firms list and its Top 200 Environmental Firms list. In the past dozen years the firm’s projects have won over 60 Engineering Excellence Awards from state chapters of the American Council of Engineering Companies.
Projects of note include extensive work at RBC Centura Headquarters Plaza, CATS Commuter Rail System, Villages of Lake Norman, Wachovia First Street Development, Bank of America Stadium, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, RDU International Airport, The American Tobacco Historic District, Bristol Motor Speedway, Arthur Ravenel Bridge, Market Commons, Craney Island Marine Terminal and numerous highways, bridges and buildings.
