STORMWATER MANAGEMENT

Regulatory-related services provide assistance with regulatory compliance with the Clean Water Act, the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and Phase II requirements. S&ME provides recommendations for stormwater management, pollution prevention plans, and erosion and sedimentation control plans.

Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) are used in S&ME’s engineering design projects. Projects may use open channels, erosion control devices, wet and dry detention basins, impermeable lined basins, filtration and infiltration systems, surface and subsurface wetland treatment, shallow and pocket wetland, hydrodynamic BMP structures, as well as operational and maintenance manuals for these practices.

Water quality issues can be a part of stormwater management projects. To address these issues, S&ME provides stormwater monitoring; develops water quality monitoring plans; performs water quality modeling; erosion control evaluations; total maximum daily load evaluations and aquatic toxicology assessments.

Stream restoration is accomplished through stream stabilization design; stream enhancement and restoration; wetland creation, enhancement and restoration; mitigation plan design; stakeholder involvement; Rosgen stream characterization and monitoring.

Projects for dams include safety inspections of existing dams, remedial dam and spillway repair investigations and design, new dam investigations and design, and construction administration and quality assurance. S&ME performs field explorations, materials testing, geotechnical engineering, dam design engineering, hydrology and hydraulic modeling. Assistance also includes preparing technical specifications and bid documents, as well as consultations on inspections, operations and maintenance, and certifications.

Hydrology and hydraulics modeling is often used in stormwater management. S&ME performs channel and culvert analyses as well as watershed and floodplain analyses.

A unique problem is solved by an original application from S&ME for the Charlotte-Mecklenberg heavy vehicle parking facility.
