Mecklenburg New Main Library

Focused on enhancing learning opportunities and improving economic mobility, Charlotte Mecklenburg’s new Main Library is committed to embodying the “public” in public library. This innovative facility offers a blend of outdoor and indoor spaces designed to welcome visitors and foster community interaction. Located on the historic 300 North Tryon Street, the new Main Library stands on the same site the library has occupied since 1903, preserving its rich history while undergoing a complete transformation. This new iteration will meet the evolving needs of the region, providing a seamless blend of heritage and modernity.

The new Main Library will be an architecturally distinctive, state-of-the-art knowledge center and public commons. Equipped with cutting-edge technology, it will serve as a 21st-century resource hub for everyone in the community. From dynamic grand lobbies and immersive theaters to innovation labs and digital visualization centers, the library is designed to be a beacon of learning and growth.

The new Main Library is more than just a building, it’s a commitment to providing free, open, and accessible resources for all. With a total investment of $137.33 million, including $72.33 million from Mecklenburg County and $65 million from private support, this project underscores our dedication to the community’s future.

S&ME is providing the following services: Geotechnical Engineering, Geotechnical Site Characterization, Environmental Services, Construction Materials Testing and Special Inspections.

S&ME’s geotechnical exploration was performed prior to the existing building demolition and required navigating tight spaces and utility conflicts. The facility is supported by a cast-in-place concrete slab-on-grade, retaining walls and auger cast pile foundations. The structure consists of elevated slab-on-metal deck, steel framing, masonry walls, insulated metal panels, and cold-formed metal framing. Site development consists of an underground detention system, a normal-duty cycle track, and an internal pedestrian plaza.
