Mobis Alabama Facility Expansion
The Mobis Alabama facility expansion consisted of the doubling of existing surface coating capacity through the construction of a parallel coating line. The expansion also included ancillary processes such as drying and cleaning. The addition totaled approximately 153,605 square feet to the existing north building. In addition, the construction included two parking lots to the southwest and east of the existing building.
S&ME assisted with construction stormwater permitting services pertaining to the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) program. Our environmental services included preparing the facility’s NPDES construction permit application. S&ME developed a site-specific Construction Best Management Practices Plan and also performed required monthly and post-rainfall inspections.
S&ME also prepared the required Air Permit for the expansion. This included an emission inventory of the new processes proposed for the facility. Our team also coordinated with designers to obtain production values, natural gas combustion capacities, and paint characteristics to use in calculation of estimated emissions. The team compared the inventories both individually and collectively to applicability thresholds of PSD, MACT for plastic painting, and Title V. Finally, S&ME prepared the permit application with the goal of minimal permit intrusion into production flexibility and capacity.
