S&ME Gives Back with SummerSTEM
July 25, 2018
S&ME was delighted to give back to our community by having some fun with our local teachers at our SummerSTEM immersion day. The SummerSTEM program is a collaboration between WakeEd Partnership, the Wake County Public School System, and numerous STEM businesses in North Carolina. The immersion day is designed to enrich the educator’s understanding of the knowledge and skills that are necessary to succeed in STEM careers. The teachers engage in hands-on activities that they then bring back to the classroom to educate our children.
The day at S&ME focused on the engineering processes required to build a school, introduced the corporate leaders needed to run an engineering firm, and provided hands-on activities led by our engineers. Teachers got their hands dirty during real-world lessons on tree identification, soil sample classification, reading topo maps, and even breaking concrete cylinders. The participants walked away with an understanding of the role that engineers play during the design and construction phases of building an elementary school. The interactive immersion of educators and professionals was a blast! S&ME proudly supports our educators implementing more STEM experiences into their classrooms as we look forward to learning more from our next generation of engineers.
