Stewart Laney, PE, DBIA, President and Chief Operating Officer

We are pleased to announce Stewart Laney, PE, DBIA, has been named President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) at S&ME. With over 25 years of experience in the industry, Stewart is a skilled engineer, consultant, and leader.

As President and COO, Stewart will be deeply engaged in S&ME’s direction and strategies to drive our operational performance and growth while working collaboratively with our executive team to support our functions and execute initiatives.

Stewart has been with S&ME for 18 years and has a long track record of success in the engineering industry, having held multiple leadership positions within the company. He is known for his ability to build high-performing teams, drive operational excellence, and deliver results.

In his previous roles at S&ME, Stewart served as Regional Director of Operations to provide leadership to drive growth, client development strategies, and strategic direction objectives of the organization while offering integrated services to nationwide and regional clients. He also previously served as Highways and Bridges Area Manager, leading S&ME’s Design-Build endeavors, and was responsible for coordinating and developing new design-build heavy civil and highway opportunities throughout the United States. Stewart also has experience as a Director of Operations for a shoring and foundation company, including extensive work with all phases of design-build projects, from team development, accelerated design, Alternative Technical Concept production, and implementation to post-design Value Engineering approval and contractor quality control.

Stewart tells us, “I am excited and look forward to my new role as President and COO, leading S&ME’s operation into a new era of growth. With a focus on collaboration and efficiency, we will continue to build on our strong foundation and achieve greater success in the years ahead.” 

Stewart is a graduate of North Carolina State University, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering and a Master of Science in Geotechnical Engineering. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in North Carolina and South Carolina and an active member of the Association of State Highway Engineers (ASHE), American Council of Engineering Companies Engineers (ACEC), and Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), where he has held leadership roles.
