Morganton Heights Shopping Center

S&ME performed geotechnical, environmental, and construction services during design and construction of a 140-acre commercial development. A 178,000 square foot Walmart Supercenter anchored the site, along with several shops. The site also consisted of outparcels for future development. A portion of an existing industrial development remained after extensive refurbishing. Construction of an MSE retaining wall was adjacent to the Walmart separated by a stream. Finally, a large stormwater management pond on site included a compacted clay liner installed at or below the subsurface water level.

Our exploration included soil test borings, hand auger borings, and test pits excavated with a tracked excavator. The field exploration program included 124 soil test borings performed throughout the Walmart area and 95 soil test borings performed throughout the remaining development areas of the site, for a total of 219 borings. S&ME also performed extensive sampling and laboratory testing to help with our evaluation and design.

S&ME provided construction materials testing and Special Inspections for this project as well. We provided materials technicians and engineers for testing and problem-solving during mass grading and utility installation, undercutting and dewatering, concrete placement, and construction of retaining walls, shallow foundations, slabs, concrete masonry unit walls, structural steel, roofing, and pavements.

Highlights

  • Consolidation tests for fill-induced settlement predictions
  • Shear strength testing for retaining wall design
  • Resistivity for corrosivity of soil to concrete and pipes
  • Permeability testing for stormwater pond materials
