The project involved the downtown redevelopment of a 120-year-old tobacco-product manufacturing facility. Located across from the Durham Bull Athletic Park, the project faced a number of environmental and construction challenges. To assist, S&ME put together a team of professionals skilled in environmental areas (including Brownfields, asbestos, lead, and soil and groundwater contaminants), construction materials engineering and testing, and related services.  The result offered valuable information for engineers encountering similar challenges in the future, including from a methodical investigation into construction techniques of the 19th century.  And, it helps transform a decaying site into vibrant downtown revitalization.
