Brunson Elementary School
Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools is the fourth largest district in North Carolina, serving more than 53,000 students across 81 schools. Brunson Elementary School is currently located on a floodplain and will be replaced. The new school will be built on the site of a former furniture manufacturing facility that dates to the early 1900s. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools is in the process of completing a North Carolina Brownfields Agreement for the property. The new school will be the first public elementary school to be constructed on a Brownfields site in North Carolina.
Thus far, our S&ME teams have provided the following services:
- Participated in in-person community meeting to answer questions from parents
- Participated in virtual meetings with WS/FCS staff to present options for development
- Participation in presentations to the WS/FCS Board of Education.
- Phase I and II assessment services
- Conducted asbestos surveys of the existing structures prior to demolition, and monitored air quality during demolition activities
- Assisted WS/FCS with the preparation of North Carolina Brownfields Application documents
- Completed an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the site
- Designed a vapor intrusion mitigation system for the proposed building
- Performed geotechnical exploration at the subject property for the planned new school construction
S&ME has been selected to perform the construction materials testing and special inspections for the grading and specialty foundation aspect of the project and the construction phase environmental consulting.
Together, with the project team, we share the common goal of delivering successful projects that will positively impact the quality of life for all Winston-Salem/Forsyth County residents, while recognizing how critical it is to continue providing top quality education facilities for our local community.
