Horry County Museum
The 1905 Burroughs School serves as the new site of the Horry County Museum. S&ME combined multiple geotechnical technologies, new and classic, to create an innovative foundation plan for the upfitting of the school and auditorium. Soft, compressible clays and sensitive existing building components provided a non-evasive foundation solution. Helical foundations also allowed the transfer of structural loads to a deep bearing layer. This reduced the impact of additional loads to the existing foundations and the need for extensive support during the upfitting. Our plan met the client’s expectations, and allowed Horry County to provide the community a modern museum while keeping the area’s rich heritage in sight.
