Duke Raleigh Hospital – South Pavilion
S&ME was retained by Duke Health Facility Planning, Design & Construction to provide construction materials testing and special inspections of the new Central Energy Plant and 6-story South Pavilion expansion.
Construction Challenges:
Work involved the demolition of two existing medical office buildings and below-grade construction in confined areas. S&ME’s responsibilities included the performance of existing condition structural surveys of adjacent buildings, observation of drilled micro-piles, temporary and permanent shoring, and post-tensioning of tie-back strands.
Our conventional services included construction observation and special inspections of reinforcing steel placements in structural concrete including pile caps and grade beams, field and laboratory testing of soil, high-strength grouts, normal and lightweight concrete, floor flatness and levelness of floor slabs and elevated slabs, reinforced masonry, structural steel, cold-formed metal framing, pre-cast concrete, and curtain wall panels, and spayed-on fireproofing testing and inspections through substantial completion.
Discrepancies identified in the work and corrective measures to resolve the discrepancies were promptly communicated to the Owner’s Representative, Structural Engineer, Architect, Contractor, and other appropriate design team members. S&ME successfully documented and managed over 65 discrepancies in the work and furnished the Owner with itemized costs and supporting documentation pertaining to the re-testing & re-inspections services necessary for the Owner’s use. The project is scheduled for completion in 2021.
