Horsehead Metals Recycling Facility
Horsehead Corporation constructed a new, state-of-the-art zinc and diversified metals production facility on an approximately 70-acre site. The facility features process buildings, storage tanks/silos, conveyors, basins, and discharge/recirculation water ponds.
S&ME provided geotechnical investigation and materials testing services during the planning, design and construction phases of the project. Services included subsurface exploration, settlement evaluation, dynamic load testing and pile integrity testing of auger-cast piles. Services also included multiple retaining wall designs, slope stability analysis, temporary shoring/underpinning for excavation, embankment surcharge loading and settlement monitoring.
S&ME performed soil resistivity (field/lab) testing, CMT and special inspection services (soil density testing and concrete sampling/testing), tank coatings inspections, NDT testing of concrete, and spark testing and observations of HDPE geomembrane liner during pond/lagoon installation.
Highlights
- Deep foundation design included auger-cast concrete piles to support a settlement-sensitive structure
- Project also included design/construction of a new bridge over CSX rail line for a relocated county road to access the facility
