Huntsville International Airport Group VI Improvements
Huntsville International Airport (HIA) served the Tennessee Valley for 50 plus years. As the area has grown and developed, HIA has adapted to support the region. The Huntsville-Madison County Airport Authority (HMCAA) developed a multi-phase plan to upgrade airfield pavements and lighting systems. The upgrades include the promotion of the Air Design Group (ADG) to Group VI enabling HIA to accommodate larger aircraft. Phase 4B is the second phase of the project. By the expansion of the taxiway, safety measures will be enhanced due to the reduction of mid-field runway crossings.
S&ME provided multiple services to support the Huntsville International Airport, Group VI Improvements, Phase 4B program, including environmental consulting services, Quality Control (QC), and QC construction material testing. The project consisted of approximately 3,000 feet of taxiway comprised of 18 inches of crushed aggregate base with 4,000 tons of asphalt and
approximately 900 feet of concrete drainage structures.
S&ME provided:
- Construction Best Management Practices Plan (CBMPP)
- Erosion Control Inspections
- Quality Control Program
- Laboratory Testing of Soils, Aggregate, and Concrete
- Field Density Testing
- Concrete Sampling
- Asphalt Testing
