Edgecombe County Landfill
The 22-acre construction and demolition (C&D) landfill has an approved final design capacity of 1,700,000 cubic yards. S&ME prepared a landfill permit application to meet North Carolina’s solid waste management regulations. S&ME prepared the Operations and Waste Acceptance Plan, Closure and Post-Closure Plan, and Gas Management Plan. This included a detailed design drawing package with final and phased grading and cap design. In conjunction with the permit application, S&ME developed corrective measures for groundwater impacts including a Nature and Extent Study, Alternative Source Demonstration, and Corrective Action Plan.
The North Carolina Division of Waste Management (DWM) renewed the Permit to Operate (PTO) in 2010. S&ME’s on-going compliance activities at the C&D Landfill include semi-annual groundwater and surface water sampling for assessment monitoring, quarterly methane monitoring and implementing the approved groundwater corrective action plan. S&ME also provided engineering services to convert the existing passive landfill gas (LFG) system to an active LFG recovery system.
