Sutton Natural Gas Pipeline

S&ME is provided natural resources services (delineation, stream assessment, Section 404/401 permitting, GPS data collection/GIS mapping, and protected species assessment) and cultural resources services for this natural gas pipeline located in south-central and eastern North Carolina. S&ME also provided full time environmental inspection services during pipeline construction.

The project originated near Hamlet, North Carolina and terminated at the Progress Energy Sutton Steam Station near Wilmington, North Carolina, where an existing coal-fired unit was replaced with a cleaner-burning, combined-cycle natural gas-fired plant. The project is located in six North Carolina counties (Richmond, Scotland, Robeson, Bladen, Columbus, and Brunswick), and spans over 100 miles.  The project entailed installation of 20-inch natural gas pipeline predominately adjacent to existing rights-of-way maintained by Piedmont Natural Gas or Progress Energy.
